In the short time since its inception in 2005–06, the Butterfly Project has grown into one of the Junior League of Huntsville’s signature projects and one of our most meaningful contributions to the community.
The Butterfly Project committee works closely with guidance counselors and teachers at thirteen area schools to find deserving girls who show commitment to academia, exhibit leadership qualities, and demonstrate an ability to persevere in the face of hardship. The counselors choose ten girls from their respective schools, all of whom get to shop at the Butterfly Boutique and take home a dress, shoes, jewelry, a handbag, and other accessories for prom night. A handful of the total Butterfly winners will ultimately be awarded Monarch Scholarships to further their educations. These deserving young women receive not only a prom night transformation but also an education to transform their lives forever. It is our hope that as these future leaders are recognized and rewarded for their initiative and drive they will feel inspired to strive for even higher goals and they will learn the value of philanthropic service.
The Butterfly Project is indebted to many generous sponsors and partners that help make it a success year after year: the participating colleges that donate scholarships and lend support to the girls; the panel of outstanding community leaders who serve as judges for the scholarship nominees; the shops, boutiques, and individuals that donate dresses and accessories; and the countless other businesses and individual patrons that give money and in-kind donations to make the Butterfly girls feel special.
The Butterfly Project committee gladly accepts as donations: new or gently used formal dresses and evening bags, new jewelry and shoes, monetary donations for scholarships and other expenses, restaurant and salon gift certificates, and new or used laptop computers.
