A simple act of kindness…a beautiful dress…a deserving girl…a lifted spirit…a fresh purpose. The Junior League of Huntsville is pleased to announce the start of the 5th Annual Butterfly Project. The committee is already working hard to change the lives of over 130 deserving young ladies from Madison County area high schools. We are currently receiving in-kind and cash donations for the Butterfly Boutique and 2010 Monarch Scholarship Winners.
What is The Butterfly Project? The Butterfly Project was started by the Junior League of Huntsville’s provisional class in 2005-06. The purpose of the project is to reach out to deserving senior girls and dress them for their prom. Over the past four years, more than 400 girls have been dressed for prom. This includes a dress, shoes, and accessories, and there is no cost to the girls.
How are the girls chosen? The Butterfly Project Committee works closely with the Senior Guidance Counselors and teachers at each school. The teachers and counselor then nominates 10 deserving girls to shop at the Butterfly Boutique. These deserving young ladies have proven to be leaders in their community, show great strength, and have the ability to rise above challenges put before them. Click here to read a letter from Sheri T. Crigger, Senior Guidance Counselor at Grissom High School or Peggy Rhoden, a parent of two of last year’s butterflies.
What scholarships are offered? The nominated girls can compete for Monarch Scholarships by completing a separate application that consists of short essay questions. This is an optional part of the project; all nominated girls are dressed for the prom, regardless of whether they compete for the scholarships. If they do complete the scholarship application, their entry will be presented to a panel of judges who will pick the winners. The 2008-09 winners received scholarship money from The University of Alabama in Huntsville, J. F. Drake State Technical College, Calhoun Community College, and $6,500 in money to the college of their choice. The winners were also treated to hair and makeup for prom, dinner at local restaurants, and many other wonderful prizes.
